Strangetown Showreel | Strangetown Animation

Similar to the Goldmine project the animation produced for the Cool Runnings Game was designed to reward the player with an entertaining sequence which then revealed their prize at the end. Cool Runnings was a lot of fun to produce purely because of the cute characters and the sequence we were asked to create was packed with comedic action.

The client wanted a snow theme so while in discussion with the client we developed the idea of a penguin being chased by a big snow boulder. Throughout the project the premise didn't change but the final product did get added scenes + props for more excitement and better composition e.g. originally there was only going to just be one penguin and the idea of the 10 pin bowling shot came about so we needed to build more characters. Trees were added to bring a difference in colour to the sequence. Also added to the POV tunnel shot was the ice-cycles falling down for more danger feeling. Changes are inevitable with every animation project and are welcomed in the early stages but can be very challenging late in the game. Luckily the changes requested at the end of the project were pretty simple and were more like add-ons than re-dos.

We knew from the previous projects that the client preferred a very cartoon aesthetic so we put a lot of energy into creating a cartoon style that bettered the previous projects. To get this style we used a lot of cell shading + flat colour textures and some clever lighting. One of the new challenges on this project was creating snow effects e.g. snow falling from sky, snow sprays + indents. To achieve these snow effects we used a lot of particle simulation.
